Frequently Asked Questions

What is an eligible project?

Examples below are for guidance only. They are not an indication of the type of community work required.

Example 1

A high school junior with first-generation Romanian parents who has participated in a teacher’s assistant position supporting Sunday school classes in Romanian at their church. They have played that role for an extended period — a few months at minimum — and the work has been recognized by the local community. Additionally, the participant has been involved in the summer camp organized by the church along with other Romanian heritage youth.

The work description would include the number of hours worked, the number of kids benefiting, their ages, and contact information for supervising adults.

Example 2

A high school sophomore with no Romanian background who has participated in a volunteering activity in Romania or Moldova, helping Romanian-speaking disadvantaged children. The work description will describe the location, the number of kids they worked with, and reference information allowing organizers to verify the work.

Example 3

A high school freshman who participated in a local photography contest showcasing images from Romania, showing various landscapes and traditions from Romania to the local community. The participant won a locally recognized award in that contest.

How are winners selected?

Winners are selected by the Romanian Heritage Awards Evaluating Committee, a group of Romanian-American community leaders, educators, and professionals. Each application is reviewed and scored independently. The committee then deliberates collectively to determine final award levels (Platinum, Gold, Silver, Honorary Mention) and any special or regional distinctions.

More details on the Evaluating Committee will be published prior to the 2026 competition cycle.
